Aisha Yesufu Reveals Why She Rejected House Of Reps Ticket
Nigerian activist and chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aisha Yesufu, has explained why she declined an opportunity to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives, saying she refused to participate in what she described as an unfair political process.
According to reports, Yesufu made the disclosure while delivering a public lecture on citizens’ participation in governance at Veritas University in Abuja on Thursday. She revealed that about 20 aspirants had already purchased nomination forms and were actively contesting for the ticket before she was approached.
She said accepting the offer would have unfairly disadvantaged those who had invested their time, effort, and resources in pursuing the position through the established process.
Yesufu stated that although accepting the ticket would have worked in her favour, she could not support a process she considered unjust. She maintained that the aspirants who had paid for nomination forms deserved a fair opportunity to compete, stressing that bypassing them would amount to denying them the benefits of due process.
Describing the arrangement as both unjust and unacceptable, the activist questioned why political actors would disregard fairness while claiming to uphold the rule of law. She insisted that integrity should never be sacrificed for political gain.
She further noted that she has no fear of losing political contests, adding that she would rather stand with ordinary Nigerians than pursue positions or honours obtained through what she considers an unfair system.
Yesufu also urged young Nigerians to become more actively involved in the country’s political process, emphasizing that meaningful participation in governance should extend beyond casting votes during elections.
