Akwa Ibom Police Commissioner Ayilara Is Dead Following Surgery Complications

The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, has passed away. Ayilara reportedly died in the early hours of Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, following complications from prostate cancer surgery conducted on Wednesday.

A source close to the family confirmed the news, expressing their sorrow: “We are very sad to inform you that our friend, brother, and family member, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, is dead.”

A senior police officer in Akwa Ibom, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, also verified Ayilara’s passing.

Efforts by ireporteronline to independently confirm the news with the Lagos State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as calls to his line went unanswered on Thursday morning.

Ayilara, who was unveiled as the acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos in November 2023, took over from AIG Idowu Owohunwa. He was later deployed to head the Akwa Ibom State Command by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in February 2024.
