According to local resident Gabriel Akpan, the accident occurred around 8 pm on Monday. He explained that the truck, carrying flour, was approaching a roadblock set up by the Nigerian Army at Nkwot Ikot Ebo on the Iwukem–Etim Ekpo–Abak Road. When the driver ignored the soldiers’ signals to stop, a chase ensued.

Akpan stated, “The driver refused to stop, and the soldiers pursued and overtook the truck. As the truck descended a slope toward the roundabout, the driver, still attempting to flee, lost control due to the speed.”

Motorcyclist Eno Umanah, who witnessed the incident near the council secretariat, said the driver veered off the road and crashed into several makeshift shops at a motor park, resulting in the deaths of unsuspecting victims.
