Reports emerged that several villagers in Silame Local Government Area were killed and many others injured after a fighter jet struck two communities, Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa, mistakenly feared to be civilian casualties. These villages are located near the Surame Forest, a hideout for the Lakurawa terrorist group and other bandits.

Abubakar Abdullahi, the joint media coordinator for the military operation, explained that the attack was part of a coordinated effort based on intelligence and reconnaissance missions to ensure the safety of civilians. Abdullahi assured that the operation aimed to target the Lakurawa group, whose members have been identified as perpetrators of violence in the region.

“The airstrikes were meticulously planned, with all locations verified as associated with the Lakurawa group, confirming the legitimacy of the military’s actions,” Abdullahi stated.

Olusola Akinboyewa, spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, echoed the same sentiment, emphasizing that the strikes were based on credible intelligence and surveillance from multiple sources. Akinboyewa also assured that any claims of civilian harm would be thoroughly investigated.

The military’s statement comes amid ongoing concerns of misinformation surrounding the incident, with the government urging caution in the verification of reports related to the ongoing battle against terrorism and banditry.
