Senator George Akume. Akume had recently asserted that there would be no vacancy in Aso Rock in 2027, arguing that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must complete his two terms in office.

However, during an interview with ireporteronline, Galadima dismissed Akume’s statement, suggesting it was a defensive move to protect his own interests. According to Galadima, Akume, a seasoned sociologist and former Governor of Benue State, should understand that political power is transient, as evidenced by the various past leaders who have occupied Aso Rock, including Generals Buhari, Babangida, and Obasanjo. Galadima emphasized that just as these former leaders have moved on, President Tinubu will eventually do the same.

Galadima highlighted that, as of 2027, the southern part of Nigeria would have ruled for 18 and a half years, compared to just nine and a half years for the north. He argued that the time may have come for the north to “make up for the deficit” and that the focus should be on leaders who can deliver results, rather than on regional quotas.

“I believe the question should not be about North versus South. It should be about who has delivered on promises to the people,” Galadima said. He further criticized those in power for focusing on maintaining control, mentioning how political parties are being approached with billions to sway their allegiances ahead of the elections.

A Strong Political Challenge Ahead

Galadima stressed that the notion of a ‘vacancy’ in Aso Rock in 2027, as stipulated by the Nigerian constitution, was not just a political statement, but a reality. “There is a vacancy in Aso Rock,” he asserted, pointing to the fluidity of power and the people’s right to decide through democratic processes.

While acknowledging the intense political maneuvering, Galadima claimed that his party, the NNPP, remains unshaken. “They can’t destabilize us,” he declared, referring to the tactics being employed against opposition parties, especially in Kano State. He also added that despite the political pressure, the NNPP remains committed to fighting for justice and representing the ordinary Nigerian.

Political Reform and Leadership in 2027

Looking ahead to 2027, Galadima made it clear that he believes the election will not be solely about regional divides but about choosing a leader who can genuinely improve the lives of Nigerians. Reflecting on the state of the nation, he criticized the current administration’s proposed tax reforms, particularly the VAT increase, which he believes disproportionately affects ordinary Nigerians while benefiting the elite.

He also addressed speculation regarding NNPP leader Alhaji Kwankwaso’s potential run for president, asserting that, as a Nigerian, Kwankwaso has every right to contest if he feels he has enough support.

As Nigeria prepares for the next presidential election, Galadima insists that the ultimate decision lies with the people, not with the elites. He called for collective action to ensure a democratic transition and a better future for Nigeria.
