In the book, the pontiff describes how his security team, alerted by British intelligence, uncovered plots against his life. According to Pope Francis, a woman carrying explosives and a young suicide bomber were both targeting him during his visit.

“There was a woman packed with explosives, a young suicide bomber, heading towards Mosul to blow herself up during the papal visit,” Pope Francis recounts. He also revealed that a speeding van with the same intent was intercepted by Iraqi security forces before it could reach its target. Both assailants were killed before they could carry out their attacks.

Reflecting on the perilous journey, the Pope, who celebrated his 88th birthday on Tuesday, shared that he had been strongly advised against going to Iraq due to security risks. Yet, he felt an inner calling to proceed. “Almost everyone advised me against the trip to Iraq, but I felt compelled to go and understand the situation firsthand,” he wrote.

The Pope’s three-day visit, his first international trip in over a year, took place amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and was heavily secured. Despite the grave threats, Pope Francis toured key cities in Iraq, including Baghdad and Mosul, once under the control of the Islamic State.

During such high-risk visits, the Pope’s safety is managed by the Vatican’s Swiss Guard and Gendarmerie, working closely with local authorities to ensure his protection.
