Atiku Explains Selection Of Okowa Over Wike As Running Mate In 2023

Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, has elaborated on the reasons behind his decision to choose former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa over the then Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, as his running mate in the 2023 race.

Atiku’s Media Office addressed Wike and his supporters, stating, “While we understand that bitterness often manifests in misplaced aggression, we must remind Mr. Wike and his team that a bitter heart cannot foster charity or inspire unity, healing, or truth.”

The statement further clarified the process of selecting a running mate, noting that the committee’s recommendations were merely advisory, and the final decision was solely the presidential candidate’s responsibility. It emphasized that the selection was not a popularity contest but a strategic and constitutional decision.

Addressing Wike’s claim that he had received 13 votes in a committee set up to recommend a vice-presidential running mate, compared to Okowa’s two, the statement remarked, “Let us be clear: leadership is not just about numbers. It’s about character, temperament, and the ability to unite. A man may boast of votes, but if his conduct lacks dignity and humility, those votes hold no value.”

Atiku’s office reiterated that the decision to choose Okowa was based on his intellect, composure, and statesmanship, qualities that made him a better fit for the role of Vice President. The statement pointed out that Wike’s actions in Rivers State and later as FCT Minister demonstrated the reasons he was deemed unsuitable for a unifying leadership role.
