African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has criticised the presidential ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, arguing that he would not provide Nigerians with a fundamentally different direction if elected in 2027.

According to IREPORTERONLINE, Sowore made the remarks in a post on his verified X account on Sunday as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The AAC candidate questioned what Atiku could offer Nigerians after spending several decades in the country’s political system and serving as vice president for eight years.

Sowore particularly referenced Atiku’s tenure under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, pointing to the significant resources allocated to the power sector during that period.

He argued that despite the spending, millions of Nigerians continued to struggle with inadequate electricity supply.

Sowore therefore questioned how Atiku’s proposed presidency would differ from the political system in which he has played a prominent role for decades.

He said, “Atiku served as vice president for eight years during an era when enormous sums were poured into the power sector, yet millions of Nigerians remained trapped in darkness.”

The AAC candidate further argued that Nigeria needed a departure from what he described as the recycling of established political elites rather than another administration led by a familiar figure from the political establishment.

He maintained that the country required a new political direction capable of addressing poverty, corruption, insecurity and other longstanding challenges.

Sowore’s comments come amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 election, with Atiku expected to face several contenders as political parties and opposition groups position themselves for the presidential contest.
