Atiku Moves Closer To ‘Victory’ As US Court Assumes Jurisdiction Over Request For Tinubu’s Records At Chicago University

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, has affirmed its authority to preside over the lawsuit brought forward by Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 Nigerian election.

The case revolves around Atiku’s demand that Chicago State University (CSU) release President Bola Tinubu’s academic records.

According to court records, the US District Court determined that it has legal jurisdiction in the matter under US law, which allows an “interested person” to seek a US District Court’s order for document discovery and testimony for use in a foreign proceeding from individuals who “reside or are found” within its jurisdiction.

The court clarified that Atiku meets the criteria as an “interested person,” while CSU, the respondent, is a public university established under the laws of Illinois with its primary campus and offices situated in Chicago. Consequently, the court is inclined to consider granting Atiku’s requests.

Tinubu, Nigeria’s President and a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), faced allegations of certificate forgery, age falsification, and perjury by an Abuja-based lawyer named Mike Enahoro-Ebah. In response, Tinubu has moved to prevent CSU from disclosing his educational records.

The case aims to determine the authenticity of Tinubu’s academic qualifications, specifically certificates allegedly awarded by CSU. The dispute is emblematic of broader concerns related to transparency and credibility in the political and electoral process.
