Being Fela’s Son Brought Me $120,000, Says Seun Kuti

Afrobeats artist Seun Kuti has responded to a recent social media dispute regarding the nickname “Big Bird,” insisting that the moniker belongs to him and challenging Wizkid fans to respect originality. The controversy began when a fan requested that Seun change his long-standing nickname, claiming Wizkid is the “Biggest Bird.” Seun rejected the claim, emphasizing that he coined the name years ago.

Wizkid borrowed my name. Your favourite artist should create his own identity. I cannot change it. I came up with this name first,” Seun stated during an Instagram Live session.

Seun also criticized Wizkid’s management, including DJ Tunez, for allegedly allowing comparisons between Wizkid and his late father, Fela Kuti, to persist. He warned that he would confront the team for not correcting fans who drag Fela’s legacy into contemporary music debates.

In the same session, Seun revealed that he recently received $120,000 due to his status as Fela’s son, underlining the lasting impact of his father’s legacy. “My father passed away over 29 years ago, yet his influence continues to benefit me. How many fathers can send you $120,000 from the grave? You cannot fully understand the significance of being the child of someone who achieved greatness,” he said.

Seun clarified that his criticism was not directed at Wizkid personally but at fans who show disrespect for history. He urged fans to focus on positive initiatives, such as charitable projects, instead of online arguments. “If Wizkid FC is over a million strong, they could contribute ₦1,000 each and build a school in Surulere. That’s ₦1 billion towards something meaningful,” he suggested.

He further rejected comparisons calling Wizkid the “New Fela,” emphasizing that his father’s legacy is incomparable and should be respected.
