Breaking News: Babajide Sanwo-Olu Wins Lagos State Governorship Election
In a closely contested race, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress has emerged as the winner of the Lagos State governorship election held on Saturday, March 18. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Sanwo-Olu the winner after he cleared 19 out of the 20 local government areas (LGAs) of the state.
Announcing the result of the election in the early hours of Monday, March 20, the Returning Officer, Professor Adenike Oladeji, said Sanwo-Olu had satisfied the requirements of the law by having 25 percent of the total of the LGAs of the state and also having the highest number of votes cast.
Sanwo-Olu polled 762,134 votes to defeat his closest rival, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party, who polled 312,329 votes. Olajide Adeniran of the Peoples Democratic Party came in third with 62,449 votes. The total number of registered voters in the state is 7,060,195, but only 1,182,620 were accredited to vote in the election.
While Sanwo-Olu cleared 19 out of 20 LGAs, his opponent, Rhodes-Vivour, won in only one LGA, Amuwo-Odofin. The Labour Party has rejected the results, but it is within its right to seek redress through the appropriate legal channels.
Sanwo-Olu, who will be inaugurated for a second term as Governor of Lagos State, thanked the people of the state for their support and promised to continue to work towards improving their lives. He called on all parties to respect the rule of law and maintain peace and order in the state.

The election is seen as a reflection of the democratic process in Nigeria, and the peaceful conduct of the election is a positive sign for the country’s democracy.
The announcement of Sanwo-Olu as the winner of the Lagos State governorship election has been greeted with mixed reactions, with supporters of the All Progressives Congress celebrating his victory, while supporters of the other parties are calling for a review of the results.
The declaration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the winner of the Lagos State governorship election is a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic process. It is important for all parties to respect the rule of law and maintain peace and order in the state. The people of Lagos State have spoken, and it is now up to the elected officials to work towards fulfilling their promises and improving the lives of the people.
