BREAKING: Niger Coup Plotters React To ECOWAS Threat, Speaks On Bazoum Reinstatement

The Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government, in a meeting held in Abuja on Sunday, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Niger Republic military demanding the release and reinstatement of President Mohammed Bazoum as the legitimate Head of State and government of the country.

However, the Niger putschists swiftly rejected the call and cautioned ECOWAS against military intervention, vowing to defend their homeland.

ECOWAS reaffirmed its recognition of Bazoum as the legitimate President and reiterated its commitment to taking all necessary measures, including the use of force, to restore democratic governance in Niger. To this end, the Chiefs of Defence Staff of ECOWAS are to convene urgently.

In response to the coup attempt in Niger, the ECOWAS Authority imposed immediate sanctions, including the closure of land and air borders between member-states and Niger, a no-fly zone over the country, suspension of all commercial flights to and from Niger, and a freeze on financial transactions between ECOWAS Member States and Niger. The assets of the Republic of Niger in the ECOWAS Central Bank, state enterprises, and parastatals in commercial banks will also be frozen. Niger will be suspended from all financial assistance and transactions with financial institutions within ECOWAS.

Travel bans and asset freezes were imposed on military officials involved in the coup attempt, their family members, and civilians associated with the Tchiani-led regime. ECOWAS appointed a special representative to deliver its demands to Niger.

During the meeting, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, called for the immediate implementation of the resolutions and urged the coup plotters to surrender and return to their barracks. He emphasized that the coup leaders bear full responsibility for any breakdown of law and order in Niger.

In response to ECOWAS’s call, Niger’s military leaders rejected any military intervention, accusing ECOWAS of planning aggression against Niger with the support of non-member African countries and certain Western nations.

The meeting was attended by several West African leaders, and President Tinubu held bilateral meetings with other African leaders and a US Deputy Assistant Secretary of African Affairs.
