In a one-sided encounter, the Nigerian team showed no mercy to their Congolese opponents. They took the lead in the first quarter with a score of 16-8 and extended it to 29-18 by halftime. The advantage was further increased to 46-32 in the third quarter.

In the final quarter, D’Tigress completely overwhelmed the Congolese team, securing a well-deserved 34-point victory. Their next match will be against Egypt in their final group game on Sunday.

Having won the last three editions of the Women’s Afrobasket, Nigeria’s D’Tigress remains unbeaten in every African competition. However, ahead of this year’s tournament, the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) made significant changes to the team. Rena Wakama took over as the new head coach, replacing Otis Hughley, and the squad was selected through open tryouts in Chicago, Lagos, and Abuja.

Some notable players, including Adaora Elonu, the captain of the team during the 2021 Afrobasket triumph, and other top players like Promise Amukamara, Ezinne Kalu, Victoria Macaulay, and Ify Ibekwe, did not make the final cut for the team.

This decision was met with disapproval, and some players even announced their retirement from the team in protest.
