BREAKING: South Korea’s Former President Yoon Sentenced To Life For Insurrection

A South Korean court on Thursday sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of insurrection related to his 2024 declaration of martial law. According to Ireporter Online, the ruling comes after months of legal proceedings examining the controversial move, which prosecutors argued was intended to suppress political opposition and weaken democratic institutions.

Yoon had announced martial law in a televised address in December 2024, claiming the measures were necessary to eliminate what he described as “anti-state forces.” The decision at the time sparked widespread political tension and public outrage, with critics asserting that it undermined democratic governance.

Delivering the judgment at the Seoul Central District Court, Presiding Judge Ji Gwi-yeon stated that Yoon deployed troops to the legislature to silence political opponents. “The Court finds that the intention was to paralyse the assembly for a considerable period,” Ji said, adding that the declaration of martial law had serious consequences for the country.

“The declaration resulted in enormous social costs, and it is difficult to find any indication that the defendant has expressed remorse,” the court noted. After reviewing the evidence, the court concluded: “We sentence Yoon to life imprisonment,” marking an unprecedented legal and political moment in South Korea’s history.

Observers highlighted that the martial law measures specifically targeted the National Assembly, representing what lawmakers described as a direct challenge to the country’s democratic order.
