CAF Unveils Sweeping Referee And VAR Changes After AFCON 2025 Final Drama
According to Ireporter Online, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced comprehensive reforms to its statutes and regulations following the contentious 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final. The changes aim to restore public confidence in referees, VAR operators, and CAF’s judicial bodies.
In a statement released on Sunday, March 29, CAF emphasized that the reforms are intended to prevent a repeat of controversies that marred the tournament’s climax and to reinforce the credibility of African match officials. The governing body reaffirmed its commitment to appointing highly respected African judges and lawyers to its Disciplinary and Appeal Boards. These appointments are made by the CAF Executive Committee and the CAF Ordinary General Assembly, based on recommendations from 54 CAF Member Associations and Zonal Unions. CAF stressed that independence and impartiality within its judicial bodies remain non-negotiable.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe noted that the overhaul follows extensive consultations with African and international football legal experts. He stated, “CAF is implementing far-reaching changes to strengthen trust in referees, VAR operators, match commissioners, and the Disciplinary and Appeal Boards. These measures are designed to prevent the unacceptable incidents witnessed at the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Morocco 2025 final from recurring.”
Motsepe further revealed ongoing collaborations with FIFA to enhance the training and professionalization of African referees, VAR operators, and match commissioners, including improved compensation to match global standards. He stressed that CAF maintains a zero-tolerance policy for corruption or improper behavior and will ensure all Member Associations are treated equally and fairly.
CAF confirmed that disputes related to the AFCON 2025 final are currently under review by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Meanwhile, the body is focused on ongoing competitions, such as the CAF Confederation Cup and CAF Champions League, while preparing African national teams for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the United States. Motsepe expressed confidence that participating nations will make the continent proud.
