Celestial Church Crisis: Founder’s Son Claims N5 Million Donation As Family Property, Disrupts Service

caused a major disruption as he sought to assert himself as the church’s leader.

Witnesses reported that Oluponna interrupted Acting Shepherd Adetayo Adetola’s sermon by seizing the microphone and declaring his intention to preach every second Sunday of the month. A viral video captured the heated exchange between Oluponna and other church members.

In response, the church’s task force, led by Akinbode Adjovi, shut down the parish for 40 days in an effort to restore peace.

Adetola, recounting the incident, said, “The shepherd was absent that day, and I was asked to lead the service. Everything was going smoothly until Oluponna snatched the microphone from me, claiming the N5 million donated for renovations and clergy housing belonged to his family, not the church. He insisted the money should be given to his family and that the church was theirs to control, not the wider CCC community. He also demanded to be named the shepherd and allowed to preach every second Sunday.”

Adetola described how Oluponna returned to the pulpit and attempted to take over the sermon, prompting a resistance from the congregation.

Shepherd Emmanuel Iperepolu also accused Oluponna of making repeated threats and confrontations, particularly after the donation was announced. “He’s been causing trouble, claiming that the church belongs to his family,” Iperepolu said.

Kayode Ajala, Head of Media and Publicity for the CCC, confirmed the church’s temporary closure. “The church is a house of God, but when threats are made and lives are at risk, we must take action. We cannot allow violence to escalate, which is why we shut the church temporarily for investigation. Once the matter is resolved, the church will reopen,” Ajala stated.

Oluponna declined to comment on the matter, stating that the issue was between his family and the church.
