Sources told PUNCH Metro that NDLEA operatives were in the area to arrest a woman suspected of drug trafficking. They had already made a formal entry in the police records before carrying out their operation. However, while the operation was underway, police officers from the Ekeki Police Division obstructed the NDLEA agents, leading to a heated confrontation.

The altercation escalated when several shots were fired, sparking panic among local residents. One eyewitness, who was at the Bayelsa Newspaper Corporation at the time, recounted hearing around six gunshots and rushing to the scene, where they witnessed the standoff between the police and NDLEA personnel.

In the chaos, police reportedly shot at two NDLEA vehicles in an attempt to prevent the agency from removing the suspect. The witness suggested that the police might have been aiding the woman in her alleged drug trade, as the incident occurred near the police division.

NDLEA spokesperson Mr. Howells Oba confirmed the operation, noting that their personnel had made a formal entry at the station before proceeding. On the gunfire, he said, “They shot two of our vehicles, and we are working on resolving the situation.”

Oba indicated that the NDLEA would issue a formal statement soon, as they were focused on restoring order. Meanwhile, Police Public Relations Officer Mr. Musa Mohammed stated that he was on his way to the scene to investigate the incident.
