Checkout 5 Key Points To Take Home From Peter Obi’s Rejection Of Allocated Plots Of Land
The presidential elections are fewer than eight months away, and Nigerians are desperately seeking a personality that will be driven by service rather than self-interest.
Yesterday, a letter signed by Peter Obi in 2007 rejecting lands given to him as the governor of Anambra state caused a stir online. In response to the letter, the former governor stated that he was elected to serve his people and that he feels compelled to remove himself from the excessive privileges of the position
Here are some major takeaways from Peter Obi’s rejection of the allocated plots of land, which represents “A New Beginning” for our nation.
Gratitude: In life, gratitude is a positive leadership trait. When a leader values his followers, he will undoubtedly carry them along. Be the leader who notices and expresses gratitude. You will be rewarded with happier, more motivated, and loyal staff. Nigeria needs a leader that appreciates its citizens.
Conscience:
What is conscience? “A person’s moral sense of right and wrong, viewed as acting as a guide to one’s behavior.” In Nigerian today this is a trait that majority of our leaders lack, Obi rejected this offer because he knew it was morally wrong for him to use his office to have undue advantage.
His guilt for receiving something he did not deserve through a competitive process or bidding would sting him.
Responsibility: Peter Obi declared unequivocally that his mandate is to serve the people to whom he is exclusively accountable. What do we cry about in Nigeria? If not that our leaders should be held accountable to their mandate. With this letter, Peter Obi has shown that he is accountable to the public and not the SYSTEM.
If you recall, Peter Obi had a problem with the Anambra State House of Assembly members when he was impeached because he spent significantly less than the budgeted sum to renovate the Government House.
Peter Obi argued that it would be ridiculous to spend the entire N600 million on renovating just two buildings. He took it upon himself to conduct the necessary research, and the two buildings were renovated for less than N120 million in total.
Peter Obi prevented crooked lawmakers from sharing N480 million belonging to Anambra State. That is what is called responsibility to the people and not the SYSTEM.
Transparency: Obi could have silently taken the allocated properties without even drafting a letter, but as a strong leader with transparency attributes, he came out open and denied the offer, and now the letter is surfacing more than 15 years later. When he turned down the invitation 15 years ago, Obi had no intention of becoming president.
When a leader is transparent, he always acts honorably and without hesitation.
Stewardship :
” I became the Governor because I wish to serve my people and to that devotedly, I believe I have to distance myself from undue privileges’ of the office” how cute can that be ? It was clear Obi went to Anambra State to serve the people and not be distracted.
These five characteristics demonstrate that Obi is a model leader; he will encourage cultural values and seek to ensure that we all keep the Nigerian Dream alive. Obi will make Nigeria the Land of Opportunities once more, and will work tirelessly to make Nigeria the Big Dream for people all over the world.
