Corruption Crisis: Usman Yusuf, Ex-NHIS Executive, Arraigned By EFCC For Alleged Fraud
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has formally charged Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), with multiple counts of alleged fraud. As reported by ireporteronline, Yusuf appeared before Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kuje, Abuja, on Monday, where he was presented with a five-count amended charge.
During the proceedings, Yusuf pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
His attorney, O.I. Habeeb, requested that he be held in EFCC custody until his bail application is addressed. However, Justice Nwecheonwu ruled that, due to the arraignment, Yusuf was no longer under EFCC custody and must be transferred to a correctional facility.
The judge adjourned the case until February 12, 2025, ordering Yusuf to remain at Kuje Correctional Centre until his bail hearing.
The EFCC accuses Yusuf of:
– Misusing his position to gain undue benefits between 2016 and 2017.
– Awarding contracts without adhering to proper procurement processes.
These allegations arise from irregularities and suspected financial misconduct during Yusuf’s tenure as NHIS Executive Secretary. This case is part of the EFCC’s broader initiative to combat financial mismanagement within government agencies. The upcoming hearing will determine whether Yusuf will secure bail as the legal process continues.
