Court Delivers Verdict In Suit Seeking Sack Of IGP Baba

Justice John Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a suit seeking the removal of the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, as IGP.

Micheal Idoko, an Abuja activist, filed the suit against President Muhammadu Buhari and four others.

In his decision, Justice Omotoso cited Section 7 (6) of the Police Act 2020, which states that the tenure of any Inspector General of Police is limited to four years.

The Judge ruled that the IGP’s retirement from the Nigeria Police Force has no bearing on his appointment because the four-year tenure is sacrosanct.

Justice Omotoso ruled that the plaintiff, who claimed to be a social crusader, lacked jurisdiction to bring the case in the name of the public good.

He ruled that the plaintiff had failed to establish any unique or special interest that set him apart from other Nigerians.

Specifically, Justice Omotoso described the plaintiff as a busybody and meddling interloper, noting that he was not a serving police officer qualified for appointment and had never applied for or been denied the position of IGP.

Idoko had filed the suit through his counsel, James Onoja (SAN), challenging the legality of the IGP’s continued stay in office after completing his tenure.

The suit was later dismissed without cost against the plaintiff.
