Crisis In The Power Sector Minister Forms Emergency Task Force For Power Stability

To address the issue, Adelabu convened an emergency meeting over the weekend with the leadership of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The minister expressed frustration over the grid’s instability, which threatens to undo the progress achieved over the past year, including the generation and distribution of 5,527 megawatts—a three-year record.

As a response, a forensic investigative committee has been tasked with identifying the root causes of the grid failures and providing recommendations to fortify the grid. The committee will also assess ongoing initiatives like the Presidential Power Initiative and the Nigeria Electricity Transmission Project, and will investigate potential sabotage.

The committee’s mandate includes reviewing the grid’s stability and identifying necessary investments and technical upgrades to make the system more resilient and modernized. In addition, a technical team will inspect critical points in the grid to identify weaknesses and recommend solutions to prevent future disruptions.

Adelabu explained that a partial grid collapse occurred on Monday, October 14, due to a line fault at the Jebba Transmission Substation and recurring issues at the Osogbo Substation. Although restoration efforts initially faced challenges, full power was restored by Wednesday, October 16.

The minister clarified that the grid issues on Tuesday were not new collapses but were part of ongoing restoration efforts from the Monday incident. Additionally, the event reported on Saturday, October 19, was not a collapse but a planned grid shutdown following a transformer explosion at the Jebba Substation, which was resolved within two hours.

Preliminary findings suggest that the Jebba transformer explosion was caused by aging equipment and was not linked to the previous grid failure.

The six-member committee includes key officials: Engr Nafisat Ali (Executive Director, Independent System Operator), Dr. Chidi Ike (NERC Commissioner), Engr Ishola (General Manager, National Control Centre), Engr Emmanuel Nosike (Director of Transmission, Federal Ministry of Power), Engr Ali Sharifai (General Manager, Transmission Service Provider), and Mr. Adedayo Olowoniyi (Minister’s Chief Technical Adviser). The committee is expected to submit its report by November 1, 2024.
