and Okugbaye, the community’s 81-year-old treasurer, passed away within six days of each other while detained by the military.

The men were among six individuals arrested during a military operation between August 18 and 20, 2024, which followed the tragic deaths of 17 soldiers in March 2024, who were killed during a peace mission to resolve tensions between Okuama and the nearby Okoloba community.

The deaths have sparked anger in Okuama, with local youths and women issuing an ultimatum to the Nigerian Army and the federal government, demanding the release of the detained leaders and the return of Pa Oghoroko’s body. In response, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, confirmed that the CDS had ordered an investigation by the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army, which is expected to report their findings by Monday.

“We are committed to uncovering the truth regarding these deaths. For now, these are allegations, and the investigation is ongoing,” Gusau said during the Strategic Communications Interagency Policy Committee end-of-year briefing.
