Ezekwesili Accuses Senate Of Trampling On Rule Of Law Over Natasha’s Removal

Former Minister of Education, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has urged the Nigerian Senate to reinstate Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, warning that her suspension undermines constitutional governance and erodes the rule of law.

In a strongly worded statement directed at the Senate, the judiciary, and citizens, Ezekwesili said prolonging the lawmaker’s suspension threatens public confidence in democratic institutions. She stressed that the Constitution clearly defines the limits of legislative power and enshrines the rule of law as the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy, noting that these provisions are binding obligations, not mere suggestions.

According to her, the matter transcends the fate of one senator and touches on the very soul of democracy, particularly the principles of representation and protection of citizens’ rights. She cautioned that silencing a duly elected senator raises troubling questions about the security of rights for ordinary Nigerians.

Ezekwesili called on the Senate to immediately rescind its decision and restore Akpoti-Uduaghan’s mandate, insisting that genuine commitment to justice and constitutional governance must go beyond rhetoric.
