FG Renames NIMET Institute After President Buhari

The Katsina Meteorological Institute of Science and Technology, MIST, has been renamed after President Muhammadu Buhari by the Federal Government.

The President commissioned the renamed ‘Muhammadu Buhari Meteorological Institute of Science and Technology’ on Thursday, January 26th.

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NIMET Director General, Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu, told reporters after the institute’s commissioning that the institute, which offers National Diploma courses in Meteorology, Climate Change Science, and other technical and electrical related areas with NBTE accreditation, is the first of its kind in Nigeria and West-Africa.

“The institution is currently pursuing accreditation for Higher National Diploma in Meteorology, Electro-Meteorological Technology and Climate Change Science in other to provide advanced training for graduates of the institute.

Prof. Matazu, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization, WMO, stated that the organization also provides support and training to meteorological personnel from other African countries such as Gambia and Niger Republic.

On the capacity of the institution to deliver on set objectives, the Director General added that “NIMET has been running training activities with facilitators from within the agency as well as lecturers, researchers and Professors from different higher institutions since 1957.
