Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Mele Kyari made this commitment on Thursday while hosting a delegation from the National Sports Commission, International Management Group (IMG), and AfroSport Network at the NNPC Towers.

Addressing the delegation led by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission and Minister of Sports, Alhaji Shehu Dikko, Kyari expressed NNPCL’s readiness to support initiatives aimed at transforming Nigerian football. He highlighted the national oil company’s role as a critical partner in the efforts to re-engineer and commercialize the sport.

“NNPC will be a prime partner in the journey to bring back value to our football, reshape it, and bring happiness to our people,” Kyari affirmed. He further emphasized football’s potential to generate significant economic benefits for both Nigeria and NNPCL.

Minister Shehu Dikko, in his remarks, underscored football’s pivotal role in the economies of top footballing nations, adding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated immediate action to revitalize the sport. Dikko highlighted the multiplier effects of football, noting its capacity to revive related industries across the value chain.

The Minister revealed that IMG, the organization behind the promotion of the English Premier League, had been engaged as a technical partner to lend its expertise to Nigeria’s football renaissance.

The NNPCL has a historical connection to the sport, previously owning the NNPC FC, Warri, which competed in Division One of the Nigeria National League before being disbanded in 1989. This new initiative signals a renewed commitment to the development of Nigerian football.
