Former PDP Chairman Suffers Paralysis

Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Bello Halilu Mohammed has suffered paralysis and is unable to walk, according to his lawyer, Duncan David Oluohu.

Oluohu made the revelation on Tuesday at the resumption of hearings in the alleged N300m fraud case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against him, his late son, Bello Abba Mohammed, and a firm, Bam Projects and Property Ltd. (EFCC).

The three were charged by the EFCC in January 2016 for allegedly receiving N300 million from the former Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) under retired Col. Sambo Dasuki for the PDP’s 2015 campaigns.

On Tuesday, Akeem Bakare, who announced the second defendant’s (Bam Projects and Property Ltd) appearance, informed the court that, while the case was scheduled for continuation of trial, the first defendant had died.

Bakare stated that Abba’s death on January 6 has worsened the deceased’s father’s health.

He stated that the prosecution had received a copy of the death certificate.

Oluohu went on to say that the third defendant (the deceased’s father) had a stroke as a result of what had occurred.

“He is currently paralysed and can’t walk. That is why he is not in court today,” Oluohu said.

Oluwaleke Atolagbe, the prosecution’s lawyer, confirmed the development in relation to the first defendant.

Atolagbe also stated that the defense provided him with a photocopy of the first defendant’s death certificate shortly before the court’s proceedings began.

He expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family and lawyers, and asked the court to strike Abba’s name from the charge and adjourn the trial in relation to the remaining defendants to a later date.

After Vynda Onochie (who represented Abba), Bakare, and Oluohu did not object to Atolagbe’s applications, the judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed, adjourned the case until March 28.
