Four Years After, Army Recovers Remains Of Slain Soldier And Fiancée In Imo
According to Ireporter Online, troops of the Nigerian Army have recovered the remains of two personnel who were killed in 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding in Imo State.
The victims, Master Warrant Officer (retd) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew, were reportedly abducted and killed by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) along the Ubaha–Orsu axis during a journey to Gloria’s hometown in April 2022 for their traditional marriage rites.
Military sources disclosed that the couple, known among colleagues for their strong bond and commitment despite serving in different locations across the country, were ambushed and taken by armed assailants, a tragic incident that drew widespread concern within military circles.
Zagazola Makama reports that troops of the 82 Division, working alongside other security agencies, launched a coordinated search operation on April 24, 2026, following fresh intelligence. During the operation, the troops reportedly encountered heavy resistance but successfully repelled the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire before continuing the mission.
The search operation later led to the discovery of shallow graves suspected to contain the remains of the slain personnel. The remains have since been recovered and are expected to undergo forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities before final burial arrangements.
The Nigerian Army has also indicated that efforts are ongoing to reach the families of the deceased to aid proper identification and closure, while assuring that the fallen personnel will be accorded full military honours in recognition of their service and sacrifice.
The incident is one of several linked to insecurity in parts of the South-East, where armed groups have continued to pose threats to both civilians and security operatives.
