From The Abyss Of 2024 To The Light Of 2025: A Year Of Reckoning
As 2024 bows out, it takes with it the baggage of sorrow, hardship, and disappointment, casting a shadow over many Nigerians who lived through the struggles of the year. It was a year akin to a ball kicked with force, bouncing into the abyss…From The Abyss Of 2024 To The Light Of 2025: A Year Of Reckoning
with no return. For millions, 2024 was a descent into economic despair, yet as January 2025 unfolds, it brings a flicker of hope—a much-needed relief for the downtrodden.
Despite the promises of Generation Z, who see Nigeria as both a ‘cruise’ and an ‘active crime scene’, the reality remains one of hardship. The pessimism surrounding the state of the nation has grown, with many seeing politicians and religious leaders as sources of deceit and exploitation.
Using the wisdom of proverbs, particularly from the Igbo and Yoruba cultures, we draw parallels between these sayings and the hypocritical actions of the political and religious elite. Proverbs are the foundation of African discourse, used to reflect on truth and hold society accountable.
Looking back at Nigeria’s military history, particularly the Nigerian Army’s lack of accountability for its actions, we see a pattern of arrogance and lawlessness. The recent bombing of innocent civilians in Sokoto by Nigerian soldiers is a stark reminder of this. Instead of offering apologies, military officials continue to hide behind their power.
Similarly, Nigeria’s religious leaders, often seen as spokespeople for divine truths, have been proven false time and again. Their failed prophecies and misleading predictions are a reflection of the disconnect between them and the moral compass they claim to follow.
As we enter 2025, let us heed the lessons of our proverbs. It’s time for Nigerians to use wisdom and discernment, distancing ourselves from those who profit from our pain. Let’s embrace a year of change and be wise in our choices.
