Behind The Scenes: Tinubu’s Promise To Free Kanu For Election Cooperation
Ahead of the 2023 elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu allegedly promised to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), provided the group refrained from disrupting the electoral process or advocating for a boycott.
Emmanuel Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, revealed this exclusive detail to THISDAY.
He shared that, prior to the elections, he was contacted by an ex-governor, who conveyed that Seyi, the son of President Tinubu, wished to meet with him. The meeting took place in Abuja, with Emmanuel bringing along a witness to ensure transparency.
Emmanuel confirmed that during the meeting, Seyi clarified that his father, Bola Tinubu, had authorized the discussions and that any agreement reached would be binding on the presidential candidate.
The two sides mutually agreed that IPOB would refrain from disrupting the election, a commitment communicated to Nnamdi Kanu, who assured his brother that there would be no election boycott. Emmanuel recalled that President Tinubu reiterated his promise during his campaign speech in Owerri, Imo State, further solidifying the understanding.
Despite IPOB keeping its end of the agreement by not calling for a boycott, Emmanuel expressed disappointment that President Tinubu has yet to fulfill his promise of securing his brother’s release.
