Rivers State Unstoppable: Fubara Signs N1.188 Trillion Budget Into Law In Record 48 Hours
This quick turnaround follows a similar event last year when Fubara, in a political showdown, presented and signed off on the N800 billion 2024 budget within a day, amid the ongoing division in the state’s assembly. The tension stems from a long-standing power struggle between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, each backing different factions within the legislative body.
The situation reached a climax after the Court of Appeal annulled the 2024 budget, declaring it invalid. Fubara, however, filed an appeal at the Supreme Court, arguing that the pro-Wike legislators had lost their seats due to defection to the All Progressives Congress. As the case awaits a ruling, the governor moved ahead with the 2025 budget, which was quickly passed by the loyal faction.
Addressing the signing, Fubara declared that the matter was settled and there would be no turning back. “Rivers State has only one House of Assembly, and it is led by Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo,” he stated firmly. “We have moved forward, and it is too late for anyone to change that.”
With the budget now law, Fubara vowed to ensure that its implementation surpasses that of 2024, despite any future challenges from the opposition faction.
As of now, it remains unclear whether the pro-Wike group will contest the validity of the new budget.
