Fubara’s Bold Move: Rivers CP Directed To Crack Down On Crime Epidemic

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has charged the newly appointed Commissioner of Police (CP), Olugbenga Adepoju, with tackling the state’s escalating challenges of cultism and kidnapping. During a courtesy visit by CP Adepoju and senior police officers at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara emphasized the urgency of addressing these security concerns. He also cautioned the new CP against participating in “nocturnal meetings” that could exacerbate political tensions in Rivers State.

Highlighting Adepoju’s extensive experience in the region, Fubara encouraged him to utilize his deep knowledge of the local terrain to combat crime effectively.

This directive comes in the wake of a tragic incident in Eleme Local Government Area, where a Dutch expatriate, his driver, and security aides drowned after their vehicle plunged into a river while allegedly fleeing a kidnapping attempt.

In response, CP Adepoju, who officially assumed office on January 4 as the 47th Commissioner of Police in the state, pledged to prioritize intelligence gathering and rapid response systems to curb crime. He also assured the governor of a non-partisan approach to policing, emphasizing his commitment to fairness and professionalism.

Adepoju’s prior assignments include serving as Officer in Charge of Operations during the controversial 2023 incident at the State House of Assembly, where water cannons were used to disrupt a visit by Governor Fubara.

As Rivers State grapples with these security challenges, the governor and police commissioner have called for collective action to ensure the safety of citizens and foster peace in the state.
