During a visit to the bridge on Thursday morning, Governor Sanwo-Olu called on Lagosians to support the government’s efforts to improve the structure. He explained that without the ongoing repairs, the bridge’s integrity could fail, putting road users at significant risk of a collapse into the water.

The Governor further elaborated that the closure was part of a necessary initiative to address the imminent danger posed by the aging bridge, which has been in place for nearly 80 to 90 years. He revealed that the project had been in planning for over three years and that the bridge’s approach end from Victoria Island to Marina had suffered severe erosion. The builder had already reinforced the bridge’s foundation, but a critical section of the bridge had been left unsupported, creating a dangerous risk of collapse.

Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that there is never an ideal time for such necessary infrastructure projects, but stated that the government is committed to preserving the bridge’s integrity and preventing a potential disaster in the future.
