Headache Grips Herdsmen As Wike Vows To End Open Grazing In Abuja
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed his determination to put an end to open grazing within Abuja, stating that such practices are no longer acceptable.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, made this announcement during a press conference held in Abuja on Monday, shortly after his inauguration.
He stated, “We will engage in discussions with the herders to find a way to halt [open grazing] because it is not permissible to allow cows within the city.”

He emphasized that cows could be situated outside the city since there is ample grazing land available in those areas. He clarified that the grass within the city was planted to enhance its appearance and is not intended for consumption by livestock.
Wike further elaborated, “Hence, we will engage in discussions. For instance, imagine seeing 20,000 to 40,000 goats within the [Presidential] Villa; how would foreigners react to that?”
This stance on open grazing aligns with Wike’s commitment to regulate livestock grazing practices and ensure the preservation of the city’s aesthetics and orderliness.
