Speaking during the handover of 60 rescued victims in Abuja by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar, Ishaya said he had lost all hope of survival due to the cruel treatment in the bush.

“I had given up. We were chained in pairs — even to defecate or urinate, we moved together. If they sensed hesitation, they would beat or kill you,” he said emotionally.

He expressed gratitude to the federal government, saying, “If not for them, we’d still be in that bush.”

Another victim, Adesanya Michael, a deputy director at the National Assembly Commission, shared how his wife was killed in his presence by the bandits, who were mostly young and uneducated.

“Most of them are between 17 and 21. They don’t even know how to count millions,” he said, advocating for rehabilitation over violent crackdowns. “They can still be useful if trained.”

Michael, who was chained for 32 days, stressed that reform, not revenge, could break the cycle of banditry.
