Tax Reforms A Step Toward Accountability, Says Bishop Kukah

The tax reform bills, currently under review in the National Assembly, have sparked widespread debate. Critics argue that the proposals could disproportionately affect certain regions and exacerbate the financial strain on ordinary Nigerians.

Reflecting on the nation’s challenges, Kukah stated:
“Nigeria is brimming with gifted and energetic citizens, but the inability of states to channel these energies constructively has led to tensions and, at times, violence. These reforms present an opportunity to redirect the narrative.”

He described the reforms as a potential step toward ending the “rascality and irresponsibility” of elites who have historically mismanaged Nigeria’s vast resources.

“This is a chance to stop Nigerians from being spectators in a richly endowed country while living with the consequences of elite financial recklessness,” Kukah remarked.

The bishop expressed hope that the reforms would serve as a foundation for improved fiscal management and efficiency, steering Nigeria toward sustainable growth and the realization of its full potential.
