Reports indicate that Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar has now been deployed to take over leadership of the monitoring unit following Fakorede’s redeployment.

Information obtained by Ireporter Online suggests that Fakorede’s appointment had previously sparked controversy due to allegations connected to his tenure as the head of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). Civil society organisations had reportedly expressed concerns over accusations of brutality, extrajudicial killings, and alleged interference in electoral processes during his time with the unit.

Further reports also linked Fakorede to a dispute involving investors at River Park Estate in Abuja. Under his leadership, the IGP Monitoring Unit was accused of confronting journalists and workers who staged protests at the estate in January 2026.

It was also reported that in September 2025, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, publicly criticised Fakorede over allegations of police brutality and claims of involvement in election-related interference.
