INEC Meets Party Leaders Ahead Of 2027 Elections — Key Guidelines Under Review

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday held a high-level meeting with leaders of political parties at its Abuja headquarters to present and deliberate on newly drafted electoral guidelines ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Ireporter Online, the gathering brought together party chairmen, secretaries, and key representatives to examine a proposed framework intended to guide the conduct of the polls. Among attendees were Nenadi Usman representing the Labour Party, as well as Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu who stood in for the Peoples Democratic Party.

The discussions centered on newly formulated electoral procedures designed to strengthen and regulate the conduct of the 2027 elections. The commission indicated that the review was necessitated by the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates adjustments to existing electoral processes. The INEC Chairman explained that the revised guidelines are in full alignment with the provisions of the new law, stressing that political actors must adapt to the evolving legal framework rather than depend on outdated regulations.

As part of its broader preparations, the commission also announced plans to commence a Continuous Voter Registration exercise. It disclosed that online pre-registration will begin on August 18, 2025, followed by physical registration on August 25, 2025, allowing eligible Nigerians to either enroll as new voters or update their existing records.

In addition, INEC revealed that it would undertake a nationwide voter register revalidation exercise aimed at eliminating duplicate entries and removing the names of deceased persons, a move expected to improve the integrity of the electoral roll.

Meanwhile, debates surrounding electoral reforms continue to generate controversy, particularly regarding provisions in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026. A major point of contention remains the Senate’s stance on the real-time electronic transmission of election results to INEC’s Result Viewing portal.

Political activities are already intensifying ahead of the polls, with Bola Tinubu reportedly securing the backing of the All Progressives Congress for a second term. At the same time, opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi are said to be considering a coalition platform under the African Democratic Congress in a bid to challenge the ruling party.
