IPOB Issues Stern Warning Over Alleged Embezzlement Of N250bn For South-East Region

In a statement released on Sunday, IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, emphasized that the funds must be used strictly for the development of the region, including infrastructure projects and economic interventions.

Powerful highlighted key areas where the funds should be directed, such as road construction and expansion, hospital rehabilitation, new healthcare facilities, and the establishment of power plants for stable and affordable electricity.

“The attention of the IPOB family worldwide has been drawn to the purported N250 billion allocated to the SEDC under the leadership of Dr. Emeka Nworgu, with oversight from Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Commission. If this information is accurate, we strongly warn against any mismanagement or diversion of these funds,” the statement read.

IPOB further recommended investments in free trade zones, industrial parks in Abia and Anambra states, and the development of functional seaports and international airports. It acknowledged that while N250 billion alone may not be enough for such large-scale projects, the funds must be managed efficiently, considering they will be allocated annually.

The group also stressed the need for human capital development, calling for programs that equip youths with technical and creative skills. It warned against using the funds for frivolous activities such as unnecessary seminars, conferences, or foreign trips.

“This is not the time for politicians to loot public funds without accountability. IPOB will closely monitor the allocation and will expose any wrongdoing. The funds belong to the entire South-East region, and no single state or community should receive preferential treatment,” the statement added.

IPOB reiterated its stance that any misappropriation of the funds would have consequences and called for transparency in the management of the SEDC.
