Akpabio had informed Senators during a recent plenary session that the Clerk of the National Assembly (CNA), Magaji Tambuwal, had transferred money to their individual bank accounts to facilitate their annual vacation.

However, due to the Senators’ unease and potential backlash, Akpabio later rephrased his statement to indicate that prayers were sent to their mailboxes for a safe journey.

This development led to criticism on social media, with many Nigerians expressing discontent that Senators were allegedly benefiting from public funds while the populace faced economic challenges, particularly due to the removal of petrol subsidies.

In response, a statement released on behalf of the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Dr. Ali B. Umoru, clarified that the N2 million payment wasn’t a new privilege but part of the 2023 budget’s allocation for the running costs of Senators’ offices.

The statement emphasized that such allocations for running costs were customary and utilized for activities contributing to effective representation and legislative functions. The funds were budgeted for in the 2023 Appropriation Act and were considered an entitlement for Senators, not a distribution of privileges.

The National Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, democracy, and good governance, appreciating the public’s continued support and understanding.
