JUST IN: Popular Singer, Milanes Is Dead (PHOTO)

Pablo Milanes, a well-known Cuban singer, songwriter, and guitarist, died early Tuesday in Spain, where he had been hospitalized in recent days, according to his agent. He was 79.

“It is with great pain and sadness that we inform you that the maestro Pablo Milanes died this morning, November 22, in Madrid,” his agency said on the singer’s official Facebook page.

“May he rest in the love and peace he always transcended. He will remain forever in our memory.”

On Twitter, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz stated that “culture in Cuba is mourning the passing” of Milanes.

The songwriter of songs like “Yolanda” and “Breve Espacio” had been hospitalized in Madrid, where he had been living since 2017, to receive medical treatment.

On November 11, his office stated that he was “stable” and being treated for a series of recurring infections that had been affecting his health in recent months.

Following the 1959 Cuban revolution, the artist rose to prominence and gained renown both on and off the island as a leader of the Nueva Trova movement alongside fellow Cuban musicians Silvio Rodriguez and Noel Nicola.

He was inspired and influenced by musicians from all over Latin America, as well as Spain, Portugal, and Puerto Rico.

Nueva Trova, which emerged in the years following the revolution, was praised by Fidel Castro’s government for lyrics that expressed its stated political and social imperatives, such as the fights against sexism, colonialism, and racism.

Milanes had to cancel his final concerts in Spain and the Dominican Republic, which were scheduled for later this month.

He initially supported the Cuban revolution but later distanced himself, though he never severed the bond he shared with Cubans through his music.

After a three-year absence, he returned to Havana in June, where he gave an emotional concert in front of 10,000 fans.

Milanes, white with gray hair and mobility issues, had not lost the light in his myopic eyes, his affable smile, or the strength of his voice after nearly three years of not performing in his homeland.

He was born on February 24, 1943, in Bayamo, Cuba, to soldier Angel Milanes and dressmaker Conchita Arias.

Conchita relocated her family to Havana in order for her son to attend a prestigious music school. In the 1950s, considered the golden decade of Cuban music, the boy learned to play the piano and collaborated with other musicians.

He made his debut in the Cuban music scene in the early 1960s with “Mis 22 anos,” and he went on to win two Latin Grammys for best singer-songwriter album (2006) and musical excellence (2006). (2015).
