LAGOS ASSEMBLY DRAMA: GAC Slammed By Own Party Over Meranda’s Controversial Appointment
The Progressives Alliance, a faction within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos West, has expressed its dissatisfaction with the election of Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. accused members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) from Lagos West of neglecting their political interests.
This backlash follows the impeachment of former Speaker Mudasiru Obasa, who represented Agege Constituency 1 in Lagos West, on January 13, 2025. Obasa was removed by a majority of House members while he was abroad, with allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office serving as the basis for his removal.
Hon. Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1 in Lagos Central, was subsequently elected as the new Speaker.
In a statement signed by Secretary Hon. Segun Banjo, the Progressives Alliance argued that Lagos West, which holds 20 of the 40 Assembly seats, deserved to maintain the Speakership in the name of fairness.
“We are not opposed to Obasa’s removal; however, our concern lies in the fact that the lawmakers lacked guidance in electing Meranda,” the statement stated.
The group expressed frustration over Lagos Central, the home zone of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, being awarded the position, effectively sidelining the zone with the largest voting strength and APC membership.
“It is shocking and concerning that the Speakership position was given to Lagos Central, where Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu originates. This decision ignores the principles of equitable distribution of political offices, which should consider both religious and sectional interests,” they elaborated.
The disgruntled members also criticized notable Lagos West GAC figures, including Alhaji Mutiu Aare, former Deputy Governor Adejoke Adefulire, and APC State Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, among others, for neglecting to protect the political rights of Lagos West.
“They have betrayed our trust and failed in their responsibility to ensure Lagos West retains its rightful position in the Assembly’s leadership. We will leave their actions to be judged by history,” the statement concluded.
