Lagos CP Vows Robust Security Ahead Of Local Government Elections
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has assured residents of maximum security before, during, and after the upcoming local government elections scheduled for July 12.
Speaking to journalists in Ikeja on Wednesday, Jimoh said the command had been working closely with the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to fine-tune strategies aimed at ensuring a peaceful, free, and fair poll across the state’s 20 local government areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.
“Our operational order is out, and deployment has commenced. We’ve also received additional support from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who approved more personnel and provided all necessary logistics for the exercise,” Jimoh said.
He noted that all security and safety agencies in the state had been integrated into the plans to guarantee adequate coverage, with extra police officers drafted from other states to meet the deployment requirements outlined by INEC guidelines.
“We have completed threat assessments and identified areas that could pose challenges; these are already being addressed,” he added.
Jimoh encouraged Lagos voters to come out en masse on election day, assuring them of their safety. “More than six million registered voters have collected their PVCs. We urge you all to vote for your preferred candidates without fear,” he said.
The police commissioner also disclosed that 15 political parties are participating in the polls and are actively campaigning.
He urged political actors and stakeholders to adhere strictly to electoral laws, revealing that meetings would hold on Thursday and Friday to decide whether movement restrictions would be imposed on election day.
Jimoh made it clear that only security agencies under the Federal Government would be permitted to participate in securing the process.
He also announced that the command’s control room would remain fully operational, with representatives of all collaborating agencies present to swiftly handle any emerging issues.
