Mikel emphasized the significance of Fernandez’s contributions, particularly as Chelsea aims to recapture their Premier League glory in the 2024-2025 season. Fernandez’s stellar performance in this high-pressure match included his third goal in just four league appearances, demonstrating his increasing confidence and skill on the pitch.

Since joining Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a record £107 million, Fernandez has faced high expectations. But his recent form is starting to justify that hefty price tag, with his efforts against Tottenham standing out. He completed an impressive 49 out of 51 passes, showcasing exceptional precision and vision. In addition, he created a critical scoring opportunity, fired two shots on target, and won five out of ten duels, playing an essential role both offensively and defensively.

In a recent interview with Stadium Astro, Mikel, a Chelsea legend, praised Fernandez’s development but reminded him of the heavy responsibilities that come with his prominent role in the team. He reflected on Fernandez’s early struggles this season, where his performances were criticized by fans and pundits alike. Recognizing these challenges, Chelsea’s coaching staff opted to give Fernandez a short rest to help him regain his form.

“Sometimes, you need that kick to wake up,” Mikel commented on Fernandez’s early-season difficulties. “The manager took him out of the firing line to protect him a little, but now look at him – fantastic stats.”

Mikel also took the opportunity to call on Fernandez to embrace his leadership role. With the Argentine now serving as the team’s captain, Mikel urged him to lead by example on the pitch. “He’s been fantastic since returning to the starting lineup, and as captain, we need him to set the tone for the team,” Mikel added.
