The guardian, identified as Sabrina Morrissey by TMZ, filed the lawsuit under seal on Thursday, just days before the scheduled premiere of the highly-anticipated documentary, which delves into Williams’ life under her guardianship.
Sources close to the case reveal to PEOPLE that the lawsuit appears to be a preemptive strike aimed at halting the airing of the documentary. A hearing date is reportedly set for next week to determine whether the documents will remain sealed.
The documentary, “Who is Wendy Williams?”, executive produced by Williams herself alongside her son Kevin Hunter Jr., is set to unfold in two parts over the weekend on Lifetime.
Amidst the legal turbulence, Williams’ family has previously voiced grievances about being sidelined from visiting her under her court-ordered guardianship, initiated in April 2022. However, the identity of Williams’ guardian remains undisclosed.
Earlier on Thursday, Williams’ “care team” issued a statement disclosing her diagnosis of primary aggressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia, conditions also afflicting actor Bruce Willis. The announcement aimed to dispel rumors and provide clarity about Williams’ health struggles.
The statement highlighted Williams’ past openness regarding her health battles with Graves’ Disease and Lymphedema, while addressing recent concerns about her cognitive abilities and erratic behavior.
Acknowledging the hurdles posed by her diagnoses, the statement emphasized Williams’ access to medical care and the diligent efforts of her current care team and specialists at Weill Cornell Medicine in facilitating her diagnosis and treatment.
As the legal and personal dramas surrounding Wendy Williams continue to unfold, the premiere of the documentary promises to shed light on the enigmatic figure’s tumultuous journey and the challenges she has faced along the way.
