Legislation To Boost Digital Skills And Technical Education In Focus, Reps Speaker Assures

Speaking at the National Assembly Complex during a public hearing organized by the House Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education, Abbas outlined plans for proposed institutions such as:
- Federal Artificial Intelligence Institute, Aliade, Benue State
- Federal College of Science and Technology, Askira-Uba, Borno State
- National Institute for Technical and Vocational Education, Wamba, Nasarawa State
Represented by Auwalu Gwalabe of Katagum Federal Constituency, Bauchi State, Abbas stressed the importance of partnerships between government and stakeholders to improve education systems and foster innovation.
Abbas described technical and vocational education as crucial for Nigeria’s growth, emphasizing:
- Expanding access to quality education.
- Addressing skills gaps with employable competencies.
- Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Supporting economic diversification efforts.
“These institutions will set new benchmarks for quality education, meeting international standards while addressing local demands,” he said, adding, “They align with our legislative agenda to enhance Nigeria’s educational framework and equip our youth for global competitiveness.”
Fuad Laguda, Chair of the Committee and representative for Surulere 1 Federal Constituency, Lagos State, reinforced the bills’ objective to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education to drive economic growth.
He stated that the initiatives would:
- Reduce unemployment.
- Advance wealth creation.
- Empower the workforce with technological skills.
Laguda concluded, “Vocational and technical institutions aim to produce the skilled personnel required to accelerate industrialization and real sector development in Nigeria.”
