Medical Breakthrough: Yola Teaching Hospital Discharges Successfully Separated Conjoined Twins
According to Ireporter Online, the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola, in Adamawa State, has successfully discharged a set of conjoined twins following a complex separation surgery carried out by its in-house medical team.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Bakari Girei Adamu, stated during the discharge ceremony that the achievement marked a significant milestone for the institution, noting that the procedure was fully executed by surgeons domiciled within the hospital. He expressed satisfaction that the hospital continues to build internal capacity, adding that its long-term vision is to position Yola as a hub for medical tourism, attracting patients from within and outside Nigeria.
Prof. Adamu further emphasized that the hospital is working towards a future where residents would no longer need to seek medical treatment outside Yola except by personal choice rather than necessity.
Also speaking at the event, a former Chief Medical Director of MAUTH and now the Ptil Madagali, Dr. Aliyu Damburam, who chaired the occasion, described the successful separation as further evidence of the hospital’s growing reputation in advanced medical care. He noted that the procedure, the sixth of its kind performed at the facility since 2013, has contributed significantly to reducing the trend of medical tourism abroad.
The lead surgeon of the operation and immediate past CMD of the hospital, Prof. Auwal Muhammad Abubakar, said the successful outcome reflects Nigeria’s growing medical capacity, stressing that with adequate training and improved facilities, the country can achieve global standards in specialized healthcare.
The conjoined twins, Hassan and Hussain, who were brought from Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State, underwent separation surgery on March 9 and have since received comprehensive post-operative care. The hospital confirmed that the entire treatment process was provided free of charge, supported largely by its management and funding from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
