Minister Announces Plan To Replace NYSC Khaki With Adire
The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the iconic khaki uniform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with Adire fabric as part of a broad reform agenda aimed at strengthening the scheme and boosting local production.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed the development during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, explaining that the decision aligns with efforts to support indigenous industries and ensure government spending contributes directly to Nigeria’s economy.
According to reports, the minister said Adire is produced in several parts of the country, including Ogun and Kwara states, stressing that adopting the locally made fabric would encourage the growth of Nigeria’s textile industry and create greater economic value within the country.
Olawande also revealed that the restructuring of the NYSC would see corps members deployed based on their academic qualifications and professional training rather than through the current random posting system. He explained that graduates of education, for instance, would be assigned to schools in line with their areas of specialization, making the deployment process more relevant to their skills and career paths.
Speaking on security concerns surrounding the scheme, the minister said the government is considering posting corps members to states or regions where they studied or are already familiar with the environment. He noted that the proposal is intended to reduce safety concerns among parents and prospective corps members while improving their overall service experience.
Addressing speculation about the military’s role in the NYSC, Olawande dismissed reports suggesting that soldiers would be removed from the orientation programme. He clarified that the military would continue to play its role, adding that the reforms are focused on shifting emphasis from military-style mobilisation to a more civilian-oriented approach without eliminating military participation from the scheme.
