A mother in Ghana has been jailed after losing her appeal over charges relating to a naked photo she posted of herself with her son to celebrate his birthday.
Actress Rosemond Brown, who is known professionally as Akuapem Poloo, posted a photo to mark her son’s seventh birthday with herself naked and her son in underwear.
Brown, 32, posted the photo on June 20 and was initially handed a three month jail sentence in April this year but she appealed the decision.
The photo upset Ghanaian officials and she was charged with domestic violence and the posting of obscene material, according to the New York Post.
Justice Ruby Aryeetey of the High Court upheld the original sentence and ruled it wasn’t excessive.
After losing her appeal on Wednesday, Brown wrote on Instagram: “SON I LOVE YOU AND GOD IS WITH YOU ALWAYS YOU KNOW … BE GOOD TILL MUMMY COMES BACK … GOD IS IN CONTROL ALWAYS.”
Back in April, Judge Christiana Cann ruled the “harsh sentence” would be a deterrent for others.
According to Newsflash, Judge Cann said: “The court is bothered with posting nude photos on social media. There is no doubt that apart from the canker of rape, defilement, physical assault, the publication of obscene materials is on the increase.”
When Brown was initially sentenced, media attention surrounded the case and prompted responses from celebrities including rapper Cardi B.
The star responded to a tweet and branded the court’s decision as “a bit harsh”.
She tweeted: “I seen a lot of Americans do photoshoots like that. Even tho is not my style I don’t think she was going for sexual more going the natural idea. I think jail is a bit harsh. Maybe social media probation or community service.”
Following the loss of the appeal, Brown also thanked people for her love and support, including celebrities.
Her post read: “THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT ESPECIALLY THE MEDIA AND MY CELEBRITIES.”
According to ghgossip.com, Brown’s son will reportedly be looked after by fellow Ghanaian actress Tracey Boakye.
