Many families found themselves unable to meet basic needs, with children often going to bed hungry.

Beyond the economic difficulties, the country also faced a surge in insecurity. The NBS revealed that over 614,000 Nigerians lost their lives due to violence in 2024—an unconscionable number that far outpaced casualties from conflicts like the Israel-Gaza war.

Despite these grave challenges, there was a glimmer of hope. The arrival of new refineries, including Dangote, Port Harcourt, and Warri, brought with it the potential to reduce fuel prices and alleviate some of the financial burdens. If these challenges are effectively addressed, they could help bring down inflation in the short term.

As we move into 2025, there is still hope for a better future. The Daily Trust urges all levels of government to take immediate and decisive action to restore faith in the country. By May, the people will demand tangible results—ones that can be felt in their daily lives. Misleading claims will not suffice; citizens will only trust policies that produce real and visible outcomes.

In terms of security, the government must commit to both strategic and tactical efforts to reduce violence and ensure safety for all. It is only by addressing these pressing issues head-on that the government will truly restore the trust of the people.
