The signing ceremony, held in Abuja on Thursday, marks the commencement of the implementation of the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) Grant, dedicated to safeguarding the Sukur Cultural Heritage Site.

Under the leadership of U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, David Greene, the initiative seeks to enhance the conservation efforts of the Sukur Cultural Landscape through a multifaceted approach encompassing documentation, conservation activities, and infrastructural improvements.

Highlighting the significance of the project, Greene emphasized the United States’ commitment to supporting Nigeria in its endeavors to preserve its rich cultural heritage.

The grant, awarded by the United States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to the Nigerian National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites in Nigeria (ICOMOS-Nigeria), underscores the collaborative efforts between the two nations in heritage preservation.

The Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the continuous support extended by the U.S. government towards safeguarding Nigeria’s cultural treasures.

Musawa underscored the urgency of the conservation work, particularly in light of the looming threats posed by insurgency and climate change to the Sukur cultural site.

The project encompasses a comprehensive strategy aimed at not only conserving the tangible and intangible heritage of the Sukur Cultural Landscape but also enhancing community resilience and fostering international partnerships.

The endeavor, spearheaded by ICOMOS and the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), enjoys the collaboration of esteemed institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University, the American University of Nigeria, and international partners like Washington State University and the Factum Foundation from the United Kingdom.

As Nigeria and the United States join forces to safeguard the Sukur Cultural Heritage Site, their collective efforts serve as a beacon of hope and solidarity in preserving the world’s cultural diversity for generations to come.
